Dr. Wingert Will Join PUMS Faculty as Fulbright Scholar
Dr. Timothy A. Wingert, the Dean and Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry, has been named a Fulbright Scholar to Poland. As part of this award, Dr. Wingert will teach students in the program and work with faculty and administration at PUMS regarding curriculum and academic programming.
Before coming to UIWRSO, he was a Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, College of Optometry and is a Past President of the Missouri Optometric Association. In addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, he is a Diplomate in the Section on Public Health and Environmental Vision where he also serves as a Past Chair. He is a Founder Member of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics. Much of his professional work has centered on access to care issues and providing optometric care to populations who need it. He is a graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry and was named Missouri Optometrist of the year in 2007.
The award presented by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, which is overseen by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is actually the professor's second one to our University - in 2006 he taught a semester in Poznan while building professional ties to the optometric community in Poland. These efforts and his input into development of our local optometry were recognized by PUMS Department of Optometry with the Vitello Medal.
